Beyond Answers: The Future of AI Lies in the Questions It Asks

“We’ve trained AI to answer anything—but what happens when it starts asking the right things?”

AI companies around the world are racing to train the best models, feeding them scores and scores of data (mountains, really) to deliver the most perfect answers to our questions. While this is a just cause, the barrier to truly unlock the potential of Human-AI collaboration (the full cyborg partnership, if you will), lies in these two (slightly laughable) assumptions:
1) AI is a mind reader: There’s an assumption that the AI knows exactly what its human wants (does Gemini offer mind-reading as a standard feature?)

2) Humans are AI-whisperers: Likewise, we assume the human always knows exactly what they want from the AI (spoiler: humans often don’t). (Ever had a client who asks for “something amazing” without any specifics? Yeah, it’s like that.)

Intelligence isn’t just about having answers—it’s about asking questions.

The act of questioning is a higher-order cognitive skill, one closely tied to human curiosity, strategic thinking, and innovation. As children, we bombard the world with “Why?” and “What if?”, driven by innate curiosity. Great leaders and innovators likewise distinguish themselves not by the answers they possess, but by the questions they ask. Research on top CEOs shows that exceptional leaders are “all exceptional at asking better questions – questions that are catalytic, that transform something from what is to what might be”. In fact, curiosity and inquiry are seen as critical traits of innovative leadership in today’s fast-changing landscape. If questioning is such a premier cognitive skill for humans, should we not cultivate the same in our machines?

This article explores a provocative idea: moving AI from a passive answer machine to an active questioner. We’ll examine why question-asking matters in AI, how today’s AI is largely answer-focused, and what benefits emerge if we teach AI to ask better questions. Ultimately, we ask: What if the most human thing an AI could do… is ask why?

The Current State of AI: Answer-Focused Paradigms

Today’s most advanced AI models – especially large language models (LLMs) from the likes of Open AI, Anthropic and Google  – are fundamentally answer machines. They have been trained on vast swaths of internet text to predict likely sequences of words, which makes them excellent at generating answers or continuations in a conversation. Their design and training reinforce answer-providing behavior: when you prompt ChatGPT or a similar model with a question or instruction, it is tuned to comply and produce a helpful answer or solution. The entire field of natural language processing has poured enormous effort into question-answering (QA) tasks over the years, resulting in systems that can score impressively on benchmarks by supplying correct answers to human-posed questions.

Meanwhile, question generation (QG) – teaching AI to come up with questions – has received far less attention. Only recently have researchers begun evaluating how well LLMs can generate questions and how those questions compare to human questions. Early findings reveal some differences (for instance, LLMs often formulate questions that require longer, descriptive answers than humans do), but this line of research is still nascent. One study notes that despite LLMs’ success in answering complex exam questions, “there is limited research on the use of LLMs for generating [exam] questions.” The authors introduce a system to fill this gap, underscoring how novel the idea still is in practice. In other words, we’ve optimized our AI models to answer questions far more than to ask them.

Part of the reason is historical: the classic paradigm for AI assistants (Siri, Alexa, search engines, chatbots) is a one-way exchange where the human asks and the machine answers. Any initiative beyond that was often seen as the user’s job – for example, “prompt engineering” has emerged as the art of humans crafting better questions to get better outputs from AI. Traditional training of models via reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) also emphasized the AI giving user-pleasing responses rather than interrogating the user. In fact, users frequently notice that ChatGPT and similar bots rarely ask clarifying questions, even when the user’s prompt is vague. This isn’t because the AI couldn’t ask questions; rather, it reflects how it was trained.

The result is an answer-centric AI paradigm. The AI will confidently generate an answer even if the user’s query is underspecified or ambiguous, sometimes hedging with generic statements rather than probing deeper. This can lead to misunderstandings, irrelevant answers, or the notorious problem of AI “hallucinations” (plausible-sounding but incorrect statements). In many cases, a simple clarifying question from the AI (e.g., “Which aspect of this topic are you interested in?” or “Could you clarify what you mean by X?”) could resolve the ambiguity and yield a far better final result – but today’s mainstream models rarely take that initiative on their own.

In contrast, human experts or collaborators know the value of asking questions before diving into solutions. Imagine a consultant who immediately gives advice without asking the client any questions – they’d likely miss the mark. Our current AIs, for all their computational genius, are a bit like that overeager consultant: delivering answers without first making sure they understand the real problem. This isn’t a flaw in the technology so much as in the paradigm. It’s the way we’ve defined the AI’s role. To truly harness AI’s potential, we may need to invert the interaction pattern: encourage AI to sometimes play the questioner, not just the respondent.

I guess this makes sense… but what’s in it for me?

Moving toward question-capable AI systems offers a cascade of benefits, the obvious ones being clearer communication, better alignment with human intent, safer and more ethical decision support, and richer, more stimulating interactions. It transforms AI from a one-way answer vending machine into a two-way conversational partner. The less obvious benefits are the plethora of new use cases that will be unlocked—such as AI-driven brainstorming sessions that genuinely challenge teams to rethink foundational assumptions, adaptive learning systems capable of diagnosing nuanced misunderstandings, strategic assistants that proactively interrogate and refine business plans, and even creative companions capable of sparking entirely new ideas.

By moving beyond passive answers toward proactive questioning, AI evolves from mere assistant to trusted thought partner.

In closing, let’s return to the question posed at the start: We’ve trained AI to answer anything – but what happens when it starts asking the right things? The answer, it seems, is that AI becomes far more than a machine – it becomes a catalyst for human potential. When our AI begins to ask why, we might finally get to deeper truths. And when our AI is as curious as we are, who knows what “ultimate questions” we might finally be able to answer together?
